Remembering Yesterdays
Hello. Please come in, sit down and let's chat a while over memories from the past. Maybe we can jog each other's memories so we can put them down for our children and their children. I hope you enjoy my blog and perhaps it will find a desire in you to do the same.

Weather in North Louisiana
As a little girl my granddaddy lived with us off and on... less off and more on. Since my parents worked when we had a question it was Granddaddy we asked. Also, through my entire life I was told of my Indian heritage, on both my parents sides. I remember asking him why other parts of north Louisiana had tornadoes and I was scared. He told me, "Baby, you don't hvae to worry about that because Indians always built their camps on a river. The reason they told was that when a tornado came within so close to a river it would jump over the water thus leaving those close to the water unharmed. So, whether this is true or unfounded, I have never been scared of a tornado in the area where we live. We live just 5 blocks from the Ouachita River in North Louisiana. Thanks Granddaddy, for being a very important of my life.

Where I began...
My name is Sue Lynn Nixon. I was born on February 16, 1947, early one rainy morning in Crossett to Florence Juanita Kelly and James Robert Nixon, Jr. I would be greeted by a brother, Charles Robert Nixon born just 17 months before me. We would be the only two children of Florence and Buddy.
In genealogy you start with yourself and work backwards. So, let's begin ... My mother was born in the home built by her grandparents, Florence Angelique Wootan and John O. Kelly. They had 15 children and on December 11, 1930 my mother was born to Lonie Dee Simmons and Charles Elton Kelly. Little did her grandmother know at 60 years old she would be raising one more child. When Little Florence was 6 weeks old Lonie asked her mother-in-law if she would take her child and raise her because she knew she was dying. Her kidneys were failing and on February 1, 1931 at the age of 16 she died.
People often wondered why Lonie didn't ask her own mother to take her child and raise her. But, she knew if her husband was going to be a part of Little Florence's life she would need to keep them together. With all of the aunts and uncles, Little Florence was a bit spoiled, some even say quite spoiled. She lived with her grandmother for 10 years at which time her grandmother died of a heart attack. Little Florence continued to live with her father until he was called up in the draft for WWII at which time she went to live with her a Uncle Tom and Aunt Grace Kelly just a few miles from where she lived with her father.
Charley was not able to serve in the war. Not long after he went to boot camp he had an asthma attack and was discharged. When he returned he married Allaway Dickerson and the three lived as a family.
At the age of 13 Florence had a suitor, Buddy Nixon and right after her 14th birthday they decided to run off to Hamburg, Arkansas to get married. Buddy stashed her in a little stretch of woods and picked her up to get go get married. Buddy paid the clerk of court extra not to turn to license issuance to the newspaper. But, it didn't work. It was printed in the paper anyway and three days after they were married it was printed in the paper. They cut it out of the paper, but the hole in the paper was pretty obvious and Charley found out.
Thus began the lives of Buddy, Florence, Bobby, and Sue Lynn.
